Hamburger And Hot Dog Recipe Ideas:
Make your cookout extra special with a hot dog and hamburger buffet bar! One of our favorite ideas is setting up a DIY hamburger and hot dog buffet bar, where everyone can build their own with a variety of unique toppings and flavor themes. Instead of just the usual toppings, set out a variety of unique options so everyone can build their own dream burger or dog. It’s the perfect way to teach your “dogs” some new tricks!
Here are some fun hamburger and hot dog flavor combos to try:
- Mexican Style: guacamole and chopped tomatoes or jalapeño peppers, salsa, and cheese
- Italian Style: Add slices of fresh mozzarella, basil, minced garlic, and a drizzle of olive oil or marinara sauce.
- Greek Style: sun-dried tomatoes (check the recipe in our Dining on a Dime Cookbook, Volume 1 to make your own sun dried tomatoes), crumbled feta cheese, black olives, and maybe a sprinkle of oregano.
- American BBQ: Pile on barbecue sauce and crispy fried onion rings or corn relish and crumbled bacon.
- Hawaiian Style: Top with grilled pineapple, teriyaki sauce, and a slice of ham or bacon.
- Tex-Mex: Add chili, shredded cheddar, chopped red onion, and crushed tortilla chips.
- Breakfast Style: Layer on a fried egg, hash browns, and a slice of cheese.
- Southern Style: Add coleslaw, pickles, and a drizzle of hot sauce.
- Pizza Style: Top with pepperoni, marinara, mozzarella, and a sprinkle of Italian seasoning.
- Garden Fresh: Go veggie style with sliced cucumbers, lettuce, tomato, sprouts, avocado, and ranch dressing.
You can use all these same ideas for hamburgers. Just place bowls of everything out so that people can help themselves and make their own special “dogs”. Don’t forget to include the usual toppings like lettuce, tomato, pickle, cheese and onion, too.
👉 Tip: Lay out all your toppings in bowls buffet-style so guests can create their own combinations. Don’t forget classic toppings like ketchup, mustard, mayo, relish, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, and cheese.

Take 3 old socks, tie or sew the ends together and then braid them for a dog chew toy. It’s especially good to have a lot of these on hand for those new puppies who are always chewing on everything.
- You don’t have to make something different for that toddler or baby just starting to eat solid food. They can have hot dogs too. Just slice the hot dogs lengthwise in fourths for them to eat. This way you don’t have to worry about them choking.
