I love this idea! Can you use canola oil instead of the vegetable oil? If not, I’ll have to go to the store, lol

I have not tried it myself Nickie but I would imagine you could. It is a much more expensive oil and for something like this you could save money and use something less expensive because coconut oil would do no better than cheaper oil like vegetable oil.

I love this idea! Hot oil is getting so expensive and usually only comes in very small tubes. For someone with waist length hair the small tubes don’t do much and usually it would take 2 or 3 tubes just for 1 treatment. Now I can make as much as I want and still save money. Thanks so much!

Why would you need the veg.oil. I think you can use the olive oil and It would be fine. I am a retired HairStylist;)just dbl. the oil or different ones if you feel the need too:)

You can use any oil you want. I don’t know if it still is but olive oil use to be quite a bit more expensive then vegetable oil so by using 1/2 and 1/2 it cuts the cost a little. Plus there are many people who don’t use olive oil. I don’t and I know my neighbor doesn’t but then Tawra uses olive oil so it just it what you have on hand.

Keep in mind of you mix a large batch and keep it in the hot steamy bathroom, olive oil goes rancid. Vegetable oil doesn’t.
Wouldn’t want you to go to work smelling like rotten olives.
Olive oil here is way more expensive so most people just use the veg. oil, well canola oil.

I would use apricot kernel oil and almond oil… adding a bit of neem oil will keep the oils from going rancid. Keep in mind tho, neem oil smells BAD, so you may want to add a few drops of essential oil as well.

I always comb olive oil through my hair before going outside to work in the summertime. I braid it to keep it off my face and let the sun shine on it. Works great!

A lot of people use a good basic mayonnaise, (just a tbsp. or two) the same way, to achieve similar results. Homemade mayonnaise would work just fine, if a person wanted to give it a try. Just be sure and shampoo well, when you are done.

Yes I remember when in the 70’s putting mayo on your hair was the latest rage. It is the the oil and eggs in it that make it good for your hair.

do you use your “homemade shampoo” (no-poo method) to wash this out OR regular shampoo ?

I would use regular shampoo. I have tried olive oil, castor oil and many different oil treatments on my hair and you really have to use shampoo. The thing is I have used oil treatments as much any more since I have been using my no poo but every once in awhile for fun I will try something.

I am all about DIY hair treatments, so I will definitely be trying the one out. Not only are they more affordable than expensive store bought hair masks/treatments, but I find that the results are even better. I can’t wait to try this out! Great post.
