Homemade Play Dough Recipe

2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 tsp. cream of tartar
2 Tbsp. oil
2 cups water
food coloring

Mix all ingredients together except food coloring in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture gathers on the spoon and forms dough (about 6 minutes). I used to make this for my kids all the time. It smells so much better than the commercial brand and lasts a long time. It’s so cheap to make and when it gets grubby, just toss it and make more. It’s amazing how easy it is to make and when you add the food coloring to get color, the kids can’t tell the difference.

I also have used this when my kids were small. My favorite thing about it is if the kids take a bite they will not be harmed. Kids do silky things and it is always best to make playtime fun as well as safe.

How do you get the food coloring in without staining your hands when you knead it?

You can wear latex gloves also you can use the dough attachment on your mixer and that will help a little. Be sure not to get too carried away with the food coloring and once it is incorporated into the dough it should be ok for your kids to use without staining their hands. It is just while you are mixing it it will stain.

Also food coloring doesn’t usually stay on your hands too long with just washing a few times.

put it in a ziploc bag and knead it…then you don’t get your hands or work surface colored with food coloring 🙂

I made this for my grandson yesterday. How long does this usually stay good for and should it be kept in the refridgerator? Right now I have it in a ziploc.

You don’t have to put it in the fridge and it will last just like regular play doh. Usually that is until the kids forget to close the bag and it dries out. : )

This has been the standard for play dough since my kids were little. Now I make it for the grandkids. However, because I have one grandchild who is sensitive to wheat (and kids do tend to taste things), I made the above recipe, substituting corn starch, in an equal amount, for the flour. The dough is a little more rubbery when it is time to knead it (initially and at subsequent play times), but otherwise it works out just fine. Do not skimp on, or leave out the cream of tartar. One time, I was running short of it, and left it out. When I first made it, it was fine, but it did not keep at all for the next play time. My granddaughter opened up the plastic canister, and remarked “Cool, polka dots!” Needless to say, the polka dots were spots of mold.
