Homemade Caramel Apples Recipe And Tips

I have to say that homemade caramel apples are probably among my top 3 favorite foods!  Mom used to make homemade caramel apples for us every Halloween, along with homemade chili. Gourmet foods like caramel apples look so good at the store and on TV, so it’s easy to imagine them being difficult, but they really are easy to make. (We include a delicious caramel apples recipe below.)

  • The trick that makes their caramel apples look so fancy is in the packaging. Just buy some clear cellophane bags at the hobby store or from your florist. Put your homemade caramel apples in the bags and tie with a pretty ribbon. An assortment looks wonderful in a basket lined with an orange or red napkin and a pretty Halloween or Christmas bow tied on top.
  • Sprinkles can be found at Walgreens for $1.00 a bottle on sale.
  • Look for Candy Bars on sale to use for melted chocolate after Halloween. Compare prices it might or might not be cheaper than the bagged candy melts.
  • Add 1 tsp. paraffin wax to 2 cups melted chocolate to make the chocolate shiny.

Caramel apples like the ones in this caramel apples recipe sell for $6-$8 EACH on the home shopping channel. They look wonderful on TV but they can be made fresher at home and for around .50-$1.00 each instead.

Caramel Apple Bar

You can also make a caramel apple bar.

Put the caramels and water in a crockpot and let it melt before you party. Then lay out several dishes of candy, chocolate chips, M&M’s, etc.

Let each person dip his or her apples in the caramel and then roll them in the candies.

Crockpot Caramel Apple Dip

Melt caramels and water in a crockpot. Then slice the apples and dip them into the caramel.

    Tawra,

Off the subject, but have you been able to finish your organizing book? I’m looking forward to reading it.

No, not yet. It just wasn’t coming together and we were getting really frustrated so we just stopped for awhile. We are going to try and start working on it again after Christmas.

It’s about 80%-90% done so hopefully we can get it done soon.

What a great idea! I don’t think of caramel apples once Halloween has past, but they would be a huge hit with all the nieces and nephews at Christmas, too.

Found your blog through Dawn at Frugal for Life 🙂

    Hi Jill and Tawra!

I just came from the beauty shop and quess what? The lady who does my hair was giving away boxes of apples to anyone who wanted them! So when I read your news letter about the Caramal apples I thought God is so good because now I can use some of these to fix the caramal apple receipe you posted! It seems a customer of hers had more apples than she could handle so she brought them to the beauty shop and told Donna to give them out to anyone who could use them! What a blessing.

I’m going to make that Caramel Apple Dip today. I bought apples at Sav-A-Lot for 99 cents for 3 pounds. Bought 2 bags!!! Great blessing you got Susan.

These sound great! Caramel apples are such a treat. Isn’t Autumn just the BEST time of the year?!

You said that your Mom would make these every Halloween … along with chili. What does chili have to do with Halloween? (Aside from the fact that it’s a good thing to eat in late October when the weather is beautiful and cool.)

Ruby I use to make chili because the kids would go trick or treating and years later we had one child whose birthday was on Halloween so we had to have a birthday party too. Dad’s would hurry home from work and then we would have to do “party” things then head out trick or treating. In other words it was so hectic and sometimes we were having to eat in stages so the chili was very easy for a dad to grab when he got in while the mom’s were trying to do last minute things with costumes etc. I say that in the plural because Tawra’s family, my son’s and I always spent Halloween together.
