homemade scented coasters make great gifts

These smell so wonderful! Add them to a gift basket of tea or coffee.

Scented Coasters

9×12 piece of felt
1/4 yard cotton material
1/4 yard muslin
2 Tbsp. ground cinnamon
2 tsp. ground cloves
2 tsp. ground nutmeg

Mix spices in a bowl. Using pinking shears if possible, cut out eight 5 inch squares from the fabric, four 4 inch squares of felt and eight 4 inch squares from the muslin. Lay 4 pieces of the printed fabric right side down on the table. Top each with a felt square and then with one muslin. Sprinkle a spoonful of the spice mixture on the center of each square. Glue* the edges of the muslin. Top with another muslin square, pressing the edges together so they will hold. Apply glue* to the edges of the printed fabric. Place another piece of printed fabric and press together until they hold.

*If you prefer you may sew these edges instead.

Love this idea ! Plan on letting my daughter do this to give as gifts. Thought it would be cute tied with raffia and a homemade cinnamon ornament.
    Thanks for the idea!

This would be a great Christmas gift for Sunday School teachers, bus drivers, teachers, favorite lunch lady etc. Just pack with an inexpensive mug, a couple of tea bags and wrap with festive tissue paper. My fellow Sunday school teacher and I always have a craft day for the kids in the church to make things before Christmas. I believe this is going to go in the idea box. Even the toddlers could help make these with a little supervision. Thanks for the idea!

You are right Brenda these would make nice Christmas gifts for someone like that. While I was writing this too I just thought of another idea. I wonder if a person could make little bags or pouches like this and fill with some rice to be heated in the microwave and people could use them to slide down the side of their slippers or into their mittens as a mini hand and foot warmer.

Someone gave me one of these about 5 years ago and it still smells like cinnamon when I set a hot cup of tea on it. I love it. I wondered how to make them and how much spice to include. Thanks for the recipe. I have lots of 5″ blocks already cut out for quilt blocks. Think I’ll use them for this instead.

These are a great idea! Does anyone know what happens if you wash them?
    Thanks.

You know Lisa I was wondering that myself. I’m not sure that you could but if you use them to set a hot dish on (like a trivet) or a tea pot or hot cup of coffee I imagine it would take a bit of use before they got messed up.

Thanks Jill. I guess taking care not spill your coffee might be the best idea:-)

Can you imagine how this would smell if everyone in the room used them at the same time under a hot drink. Have fun making them.

What is the purpose of the felt in the “rug”?

Because these are coasters the felt is used so that it will not scratch the table top.
